Monday’s Tai-Chi and QiGong class:

Gentle Movements
for Balance, Calm, and Inner Strength

Mondays at 5:00pm, hybrid in-person or Zoom.

Address: Calvin Presbyterian Church, 248 Westmount Rd East, Kitchener

These classes include QiGong for relaxation and stamina, short Tai-Chi sequences (4 Directions, 13 Powers). We will continue practicing the Power Animal QiGong, a fun and harmonious way to move naturally mimicking the qualities and character of several animals (Crane, Phoenix, Tiger etc). We will also focus on practices for the Fall and Winter seasons. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Fall is the time of the Metal Element, and relates to letting go of what no longer serves us. Winter is a time of slowing down, introspection, and rest, with the Water Element.

At 6:00pm, the Monday class is followed by a bonus time of 30 min., customized for you with gentle exercises for core strengthening, hips and low back health, good posture, or hands dexterity. At this time of year, we are focusing on gently strengthening the core for low back health, and exercising the hands and fingers to prevent their stiffness with the cold weather.

Wednesday’s “Bilingual Qi Bilingue” class:

Simple, and profoundly effective practices
for your body and your brain

Wednesdays at 12pm EST (ou 18h00 en France), Zoom.

It’s good for you, it’s easy and suitable to all, it’s both in English and en français. But beyond words, it’s there to help you gain calm, focus, balance, agility, and inner strength.

In designing this program, Patricia brings together her background in Biomedical Engineering, her practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine, her years of meditation, Tai-Chi and Kung-Fu practice, and her ever curious and creative mind.

This program is gentle and suitable to all, and will help you develop and maintain body and brain function.

We will enjoy gentle and flowing Qi-Gong movements, continue with the Soft Animal QiGong, and breathing practices for health and longevity.

- Why bilingual?
Patricia’s mother often joins this session from France, as well as her best French friend. Et j’espère que beaucoup de français et de francophiles de tous les horizons vont aussi se joindre à nous!

WHAT IS TAI-CHI?

Tai-Chi (pronounced tie-chee) increases vitality, coordination, balance, and memory. Sequences of slow and graceful movements loosen the body, calm the mind, and improve brain function. Tai-Chi is mostly known for its health benefits rather than its martial application. But this style of slow exercises coming from China is also considered an Internal Martial Art. It is based on coordinated relaxed movements, proper posture, rather than muscular strength.

CNN recently describes Tai-Chi as “Medicine in Motion”! Check out the CNN video here.

The Mayo Clinic recognizes Tai-Chi for its ability to reduce stress and anxiety, and for its benefits for flexibility and balance. Read the Mayo Clinic’s article.

What is QiGong?

QiGong (pronounced chee-gong) benefits internal organs, and promotes longevity. These slow flowing movements and breathing practices are an integral part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and come from several millennia of natural health preserving methods.

While the general understanding of health and disease of TCM differs from what we are are used to in the West, QiGong’s benefits are supported by a growing body of scientific research. For instance, the Wall Street Journal reports health improvement in areas as diverse as high blood pressure, depression, focus, balance, fatigue, quality of life in cancer treatments etc. Read the WSJ article.

Your INSTRUCTOr, Patricia Beretta

Patricia Beretta, PhD, RAc, has been teaching Tai-Chi & QiGong for over 15 years.

She blends traditional Tai-Chi and QiGong methods with other experiences that shaped her life: her background as a Biomedical Engineer (PhD), and her integrative medicine skills as a Registered Acupuncturist and Shiatsu Therapist, as well as other practices from athletic activities, kung-fu, pilates, and mindfulness.

With her ever curious and creative mind, Patricia designs programs to make her students feel better physically, and emotionally.

She is continually inspired by the ancient knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), its pertinence for the health issues of our modern society, as well as by the advancements of scientific medicine. While TCM and Western Medicine may seem like opposites, their integration, like Yin and Yang, offers tremendous benefits to patients and practitioners.

It’s great to join a class in person! After the class, I feel better, and I breathe better!
